NEW GROUP: We will start a natural history Group to study the Flora and Fauna of Dorset, with both indoor and outdoor meetings – if there is sufficient interest. We have a number of people willing to help with this group who are unable to lead it. We still need a Group Leader. For more information please contact Peter Scaife.
Get By in French: Needs a new Group Leader with Richard Mann stepping down soon. The Group is aimed at those who would like to speak and understand French in situations such as a market, a restaurant, a pharmacy. Emphasis is placed on actually speaking and listening to French. The Group meets on 1st and 3rd Mondays from 13:30 to 15:00. Contact Peter Scaife for information. Bird Watching: Needs a new Group Leader with Janet Kennewell stepping down soon. It is a friendly group of members interested in expanding our knowledge of birds. Field visits involve gentle strolls along footpaths to nature reserves or other habitat and meets on the third Monday of the month at 9.30 am. Contact Peter Scaife for information. Theatre Visits: Is organising a trip to see The Kite Runner on Wednesday 20th March 2024. This play is based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini. It is at the Theatre Royal Bath, costing £60 to include coach travel (depart 9.30 to 10 am) and theatre tickets in the stalls. Coach travel only to Bath £17. You may bring along non-member friends for an additional £1. Expected return to Dorchester approximately 7 pm. See Group Page Architecture Appreciation: The topic for the next meeting is “Lighthouses”. The Group meets in the lower classroom, HTPC on Monday 13th November, 11.00. All welcome! Please contact Rosy Limbach for more details. Dining Club: The November lunch is Indian Fine Dining at the Rajpoot, 43 High West Street on Thursday 16th November 12.00 for 12.15. Contact the meal manager, Jackie Cape to book your place. Chess: is Now meeting in the HTPC upper classroom on 2nd and 4th Thursdays 14.30 - 17.00. Beacon: During November, the old Groups timetable will disappear from our website and be replaced by a calendar which has its information provided directly by Group Leaders via our Beacon system. Music Appreciation: The programme for the next meeting covers some familiar works including Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto, and some you may not have heard before. The meeting is on Tuesday 14th November. Full details including a handout can be found on the website. The meeting starts 10.15am and finishing around 12pm; Venue: Signature House; Cost £1/session including tea/coffee. see Group Page Portraiture: Elaine Mills still has space for members to join her small portrait drawing Group. The Group meets fortnightly on Wednesdays from 2.30 to 4.30. Contact Elaine for more information. Wine Appreciation: The Group now meets in Niall Simpson’s home on the 3rd Tuesday of the month a 7.15pm. New members very welcome to join. contact wine@dorchesteru3a.org.uk Mah-Jong BMJA Rules: A beginner’s course started last Thursday. People wishing how to learn the game are still welcome to join the group. It is on Thursdays 2-4pm for 8 weeks, with a 2 week break over the Christmas period at the Frank Reynolds Community Centre. See Group page for more information. Pickleball: is now running weekly sessions on Mondays 5-6 pm at St Osmund's Sports Centre. There is a waiting list in place to join. Over winter we have to reduce to 2 courts due to sports centre capacity. Members reserve their place at weekly sessions via the Spond App. Contact Di Osborne for information. Badminton: From November, the Badminton group will meet at Charminster Community Hall, Charminster. DT2 9QY at 2pm to 4pm on the 1st and 3rd Fridays. The cost is £1.
