Mah-Jong (BMJA) Group
For those people who do not know, Mah-Jong is an ancient Chinese game and is NOT like the Mah-Jong game you find on your computer where you just match two identical tiles against the clock. This game is totally different!
The AIM OF THE GAME is for each player to attempt to assemble FOUR sets of tiles, with each set consisting of 3 or 4 tiles plus one ‘PAIR’ of identical tiles. The tile sets are named ‘CHOW’, ‘PUNG’, and ‘KONG’, which form either a ‘DIRTY/CLEAN HAND’. Alternatively, a player may attempt to assemble the tiles into a unique pattern of which there are nineteen, known as ‘SPECIAL HANDS’. The winner of the game is the first player to lay down a completed hand by going/calling “MAH-JONG”.

The Chinese game of Mah-Jong (for 2, 3 or 4 players) is exciting, fast flowing, using skill and strategy and very enjoyable to the point of do I play to go Mah-Jong and win the game or do I play to lose a game and let another player call Mah-Jong or do I play to prevent anybody from winning: it is your decision! I will teach you when and how to make that decision and become the outright winner.

The Mah-Jong (BMJA) Group are a very friendly bunch of players, some of whom are new to the game, some are still learning the intricacies of the game and some of whom have played in the past but require a ‘re-boot’. Martin Sharpe is the group leader and an experienced player, who will teach any new players the BMJA rules. Martin has also written a book explaining how to play the game.
The group meets every Thursday, 2-4pm at the Frank Reynolds Community Centre, 536 Dorchester Road, Weymouth DT3 5BY. The No 10 Dorchester to Weymouth bus stops within 50m of the venue (the bus stops after the Littlemoor Road junction to Upwey Railway Station).
Everybody, whatever their knowledge of the game is most welcome to come and join us even if you miss the above course. Come and learn how to play by the British Mah-Jong Association rules, learn something new and have fun at the same time. Please contact Martin Sharpe, Group-Leader, by email/telephone at:
