Backgammon, Go and Ancient Games
We now meet on the first Thursday of each month. The venue and times remains the YMCA Dorchester from 10.00 to 11.30. The session, following the introduction by members of new games, will be Backgammon, Go and Ancient Games featuring games such as UR (from Mesopotamia), Tabula (from Ancient Rome - a favourite of soldiers across the empire) and an old Egyptian game, Senet.
The unpredictability of this ancient game of chance and strategy accounts for Backgammon's enduring popularity. It is relatively easy to learn and teasingly challenging to control the outcome. Beginners in the group learn from the more experienced players in the friendly competitive and enjoyable atmosphere. The group is comparatively small and sociable. The session caters for those wanting to learn or just to play, enjoy and improve.
Go is a 4000-year-old board game that originated in China. The two players take turns placing stones in an effort to surround territory. The rules can be learned in minutes, yet the complexity of the game provides lifetime enjoyment.
