Modern Russia: History, Culture and Language
The principal focus of this group is Russian and Soviet history from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Significant aspects covered include tsarist Russia, the Russian Revolution(s), the development of the USSR in peace and war, the eventual break-up of the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia up to the present day. Alongside the history we will explore the politics, society, economy and culture, and other aspects of the Soviet and post-Soviet period. We use resources such as books, articles, visual resources and material from the internet. By Christmas 2021, the group had covered events in tsarist Russia and how Russia emerged into the twentieth century. This has been the main focus of the group’s activity.
However, we have also begun to study the very basics of the Russian language, focusing on the Cyrillic alphabet. This is less difficult to grasp than many people think. For those who wish to work towards a higher level of proficiency in the language, there will be an opportunity to do so, but it is not essential for others in the group.
We meet fortnightly on Thursdays, in the lower classroom of Holy Trinity Parish Centre, between 9.30 and 11 a.m. If you are interested in knowing more about the group, please contact John Laver, the group leader
